Cultura Throughout the Years...

Before DLSU Cultura, there was a literature organization called Literature Circle (LitCircle). However, it was declining for many reasons, but mainly because of the lack of support and publicity— and it finally collapsed around 2014-2015.

In 2015-2016, Riddick Matthew Recoter, a former Lasallian student who was graduating that time, had a vision set for the Literature program. After realizing that he and his batchmates (composed of 111 & 112) weren’t able to have any fundamental organizational experiences focused mainly on their program, he was then motivated to establish a homegrown Literature student organization that would focus on honing the literary and cultural skills of their students. These mainly consisted of career development talks, student-led Literature-specific seminars, advocacy programs, book drives, organized review sessions for the qualifying and comprehensive exams, and many others that can help complete the Literature arc of any Literature major.

Cultura was further established by the help of the succeeding batch of Literature majors (113) whose team was led by the first Cultura President, Hanna P. Norimatsu.

The name “Cultura” was chosen because it perfectly bridged Literature and Cultural Studies, (the latter not being a part of the Literature curriculum at that time).

However, vision and motivation weren't enough. Despite Recoter taking a huge step to further the establishment of DLSU Cultura, the success of the organization’s establishment would also belong to the next batch that came after him, the 113 Literature majors. They did all the hard work—from the legwork to the execution of the vision—and sacrificed a lot of their precious time to raise Cultura from its infancy. This team was led by Hanna P. Norimatsu, the first President of Cultura.

Currently, DLSU Cultura is still growing and eager to welcome more Literature majors with open arms. The legacy of Literature is sure to remain throughout the years as long as they remember to cultivate memories through words.

HISTORY

BEHIND THE LOGO

Cultura Logo (A.Y. 2014 - 2022)

The logo was plain and simple because the officers did not want to add intricacies to it. Having the logo be black and white meant to discourage elitism and exclusivity in literature. The logo represents the message that DLSU Cultura is not only limited to literature majors, but is open as well to other college departments and, figuratively speaking, cultures.

Now that the organization has established a better foundation over the years, we wanted to add a symbol to give our organization a sense of identity that can be easily depicted by the public and to strengthen our image. We hope to reach and pull more people in by changing the brand, making it more suited to their wants and preferences, and adapting to the changing times.

MISSION

To appraise its vision in expanding to acceptance and welcoming of culture and the arts by community building, Cultura aims to raise awareness that is conscious of valuing culture and the  arts, especially literature and cultural studies and their indispensability from other fields. The organization intends to maintain the quality in its provisions for educating its members to become responsible audiences and to preserve the good relationship of the Department of Literature and its  majors through academic assistance and extracurricular activities. Finally, Cultura aims to go beyond the borders of the University and reach out to different cultures in different communities, establishing LaSallian excellence in literature, cultural studies, and the arts.

VISION

As an organization led by literature majors, its resolve lies in community building. Cultura works toward spreading ideas that open people to many cultures and cultural practices that define simple and complex human experiences. Through the dissemination and inculcation of such concepts, Cultura aims to create a sense of belongingness among individuals of varying backgrounds and stories.
