Introduce yourself - Name, ID #, specialization. You may specify why that is your chosen specialization. - Hello! I am Lysander Base, ID 121, a LIA-COM student with a specialization in Literary and Cultural Studies in my AB Literature program while taking BS Legal Management as my second program. I also have a minor in Philippine Cultural Studies. Having a goal of attaining an expansive coverage of knowledge, the specialization’s multifaceted nature as a discipline made me choose it to be my focus of study in college. It offers you different perspectives on how one can interpret texts to understand the local and global community more. My COB and minor program is a way for me to maximize the opportunity to learn more in different fields of disciplines.
Why did you choose Literature? Was this your first choice? (If you shifted, what course did you come from and why did you shift?) - Even before college, AB literature really caught my eye because of my senior high school teacher who influenced me to take the program. My decision is also a challenge to myself to deal with a field that is dynamic and challenging. On the other hand, I am also taking BS Legal Management and a minor in Philippine Cultural Studies to maximize the opportunity to attain a wide range of knowledge.
How is your experience with your Majors? - Major courses in Literature are challenging yet fulfilling as it also suffices how you perceive the environment around you. Not only would it increase your knowledge in texts alone, but also change your perception of how you view the society and the world as a whole. As it introduced me to different creative works, concepts, ideologies, and frameworks, it gave me a challenge on how I would apply such learnings as a literature major, notably as to understand and analyze the status quo of our culture. All the readings that our instructors gave us, would not only induce you to think critically but be analytic as much as possible. To sum it up in two Tagalog phrases, “Pipigain talaga ang utak mo” and “Mas mauunawaan mo ang mundo.” Balancing it with the majors in my other program is quite difficult due to the workload of both programs. Time management is an important matter as to suffice all requirements that are given by both programs. It also includes allotting enough time to study for both programs especially for quizzes or understanding concepts especially those that are initially difficult to do so.
Favorite moment in your Majors so far? What’s the most challenging so far? - My favorite moment so far is writing non-fiction during LITCREW as it became a way for me to express internal guilt while doing something I feel academically satisfied with. The said major course also gave me vital learnings that not only improved how I write my crafts but also debunk prior knowledge on how I should write. However, the most challenging for me is LITETHN. The said course is an elective, which made me realize that I need to evaluate and work on my self-reflexivity as someone in cultural studies. Nonetheless, I learned a lot from the program and in the final paper that I did with my groupmates. For my other program, I would say my favorite is COBSHUR. Not only did I learn a lot about human resources but I was also to correct myself regarding misconceptions in the field. The most challenging, however, is COBLAW2 as the exams and recitations would hone yet challenge your understanding of law. Nonetheless, it helped me cope with numerous readings to deal with every week.
What’s your advice for incoming Lit Majors? How to survive subjects? Orgs? Opportunities? - To the upcoming literature majors, do not wait for a sign when to start reading. You should always read regardless of whatever reason may demand you to do so. Learning and engaging in texts as a literary scholar is not confined during lectures or doing homeworks. It is the way to learn poetics which will nourish your ability to write. Being familiar with approaches to literary criticism and to appreciate such is also what makes it important. Only when you read would you maximize the opportunity of being artistic and critical as a literature major. Even though the program demands a considerable amount of time in academics, do not be afraid to engage in extracurriculars. Not only you would be able to socialize but also learn from the perspective of other people especially those who are literature majors also. The fun that you would have with them is indeed a break from the tons of reading you would encounter. Try to check out Cultura, the home organization of AB Literature students. The organization is engaging towards its members and also provides aid to the academic life of students.
