Confessions of A Lit Major - Reiner Bilang

  1. Introduce yourself - Name, ID #, specialization. You may specify why that is your chosen specialization. - I am Reiner Bilang, people call me Rei. ID 122, and I chose to specialize in fiction. I was supposed to choose poetry, but I wanted to challenge myself by going into something that I am a bit weak at.

  2. Why did you choose Literature? Was this your first choice? (If you shifted, what course did you come from and why did you shift?) - Literature was my first choice. But I was supposed to go to Literary and Cultural Studies. However, I shifted to Creative Writing because I realized Literary and Cultural Studies were not for me. I wanted to focus more on creativity rather than the research side of literature. As much as I love research, I just do not see myself being in that study for my entire stay in DLSU.

  3. How is your experience with your Majors? - Majors are challenging. There is no sugar coating when I say that the majors are truly jarring. There are multiple readings in a week, and another for the following week. However, I do enjoy it. I am able to gather different insights, and have a different understanding of how the world operates. In short, my experience with my majors are 50/50 so far.

  4. Favorite moment in your Majors so far? - My favorite moment was when I submitted my final paper for LITCULT. It was a criticism of BGC, and my professor (in a way) complimented my paper. I got a pretty good grade from that paper. It was also one of the challenging moments of my stay here so far because I had to make sure everything was cohesive and coherent in my paper. It was one of the papers that led me to not sleep for a day.

  5. What’s your advice for incoming Lit Majors? How to survive subjects? Orgs? Opportunities? - Make friends within the program who are like-minded as you. As a person who has multiple friend groups, it helps having them. Because people outside of Lit will never fully understand our struggle; they’ll empathize, but never fully understand us. Time management will also help you a lot, and find a study routine that works for you. In terms of orgs, it is up to you. I have 5 orgs as this is published, and I am still alive. Orgs will help you build a network, but it is not necessary. But please join Cultura!
