Introduce yourself - Name, ID #, specialization. You may specify why that is your chosen specialization. - Hi! My name is Julienne Salazar, ID 119 and I am studying AB Literature Major in Creative Writing with a Minor in Marketing Strategy.
Why did you choose Literature? Was this your first choice? (If you shifted, what course did you come from and why did you shift?) - Going into college, I knew that I wanted to study the humanities and I was drawn to Literature because in senior high school, my thesis was about uplifting Philippine Literature through a Reading Program. However, I initially thought that LIA-COM would be the right course for me, and the possibility of combining courses is what brought me to La Salle. But upon learning that I could minor in the Marketing Course I initially wanted to combine Literature with, I decided to go with this path so that I could focus on one Major.
How is your experience with your Majors? - It was challenging. Having taken most of my major classes during the pandemic without having met my batchmates. It was an isolating experience, and it felt a bit odd trying to focus on classes, while the global pandemic raged on. I wondered if I would ever be able to take a major class on campus. However, despite all this I found joy in my majors, each class was so unique, and the program truly does build upon everything you learn, one major at a time. It was a diverse experience; some majors were difficult to grasp and heavy with literary theories and the history of the entire literary canon. But others were more enjoyable like reading children's literature, putting on a musical, and watching various films for class. The Literature majors have expanded my consciousness, widened my knowledge, and challenged my craft in a very authentic way throughout the entirety of the course.
Favorite moment in your Majors so far? What’s the most challenging so far? - My favorite moment in my majors was putting on the Mamma Mia Musical with my batchmates for our Musical Theater elective. This was the first and last face-to-face class that most of our batch was able to take together. Therefore, this course holds a special place in my heart, as it was a real bonding experience! We spent days rehearsing, practicing songs, trying to choreograph dances, wondering why we did this, and losing our minds in the best way only a musical production can do. But we still pushed through, and I had the most fun trying to sing and dance in front of the whole department! My most challenging moment on the other hand was being delayed…Most unexpectedly my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and for an entire year, our family tried our best to take care of her and keep our household going too. However, this took a serious toll on my academics, and it resulted in me withdrawing from classes. Classes that I had to complete later, I felt like I was letting her down, like I was falling behind. But I am glad I kept going, and I met more amazing people along the way. Then eventually and thankfully I made it to my final term.
What’s your advice for incoming Lit Majors? How to survive subjects? Orgs? Opportunities? - Keep going. There will be challenges and drawbacks you don’t see coming, but there is always a way forward, so you need to keep going. Have faith in yourself and the importance of what you are studying. Know why you are doing this and hold on to that. Finally, ask questions and ask for help, no one can do this alone. It was when I finally asked for help that I was able to keep going. You got this!
